Q: What is Company?
Jan's School of Dance has established a competitive dance team called "Jan's Dance Company", or "Company" for short. We have both a travel team and a non-travel team to accommodate the different levels of commitment and travel availability of our Company families.

Q: Company is for older more advanced dancers, right?
No! We offer the competitive dance experience for all ages and skill levels:
Age Divisions:
Minis (5 and under)
Petites (6-8)
Juniors (9-11)
Teens (12-14)
Seniors (15 and up)
Skill Levels:
Beginner
Intermediate
Advanced
Q: I don't know much about competitive dance. Can you explain it to me?
Competitions are divided by age groups (e.g., mini, junior, teen, senior) and skill levels (e.g., beginner, intermediate, advanced). Judges typically use a points system to evaluate performances. Scores are based on factors like technique, choreography, execution, musicality, and showmanship. Competitions provide dancers with constructive feedback from industry professionals, helping them to improve their skills. Awards can include trophies, medals, scholarships, or special titles (e.g., "Overall High Score" or "Best Choreography").
Q: Will my child will lose touch with their dance friends if they join Company?
Definitely not! Even if your child takes a Company class, they can still take recreational classes to stay in contact with their existing friends. Many of our Company dancers take Company and recreational classes and enjoy all the friendships that come with both.
Q: How much does it cost?
Company prices are comparable to recreational prices. Company students also get free ballet and jazz technique classes to lock in the fundamentals of dance.

Q: What are the benefits of joining Company?
Besides creating lifelong friendships and memories, competitive dance builds discipline, teamwork, confidence, and physical fitness. It also provides opportunities for artistic expression, performing for large audiences, and personal growth.
Q: Can you tell me more about the auditions?
There is a $25 audition fee due on the day of auditions. Parents may drop off or wait in the waiting room while auditions are in session. Attire for auditions is black leotard, pink tights and a tidy bun. Students may wear form-fitting black shorts for the non-ballet portions of the audition.
Our dance team auditions are structured to ensure that each age group receives the appropriate attention and evaluation based on their developmental stage and skill level. We have divided the auditions into two main groups: Minis and Petites (ages 3-8) and Juniors, Teens, and Seniors (ages 9-18). For our Minis and Petites, the focus will be on basic movement, coordination, and a love for dance. These auditions will be filled with fun and engaging activities, allowing your child to feel comfortable and confident while we observe their ability to follow simple steps, pick up choreography, and interact with other dancers. It’s a relaxed environment where we look for enthusiasm, rhythm, and their potential for growth in dance.
For our Juniors, Teens, and Seniors, the audition process will be more structured and will assess technical skills, musicality, and performance ability. These dancers will be given more challenging choreography to learn, and we will evaluate their ability to pick up and perform the material, as well as their overall technique, flexibility, and stage presence. The goal is to ensure that each dancer is placed in a group where they can thrive and continue to develop their skills within a competitive setting. Whether your child is a beginner or has experience, our audition process is designed to ensure they have a positive, welcoming experience while we find the best fit for them on our competitive dance team.
For dancers aged 10 and older who would like to be considered for a solo or duet, they will need to prepare two to four 8-counts of choreography prior to auditions and be prepared to perform it and answer questions.
